Many of our high priced moisturizers, face creams, and cleansers do the exact opposite of what they claim. So while you may think that you’re creating a youthful, skin-tightening glow, you may be deconstructing the collagen production with chemical laden skin care products that offer "fast results" but deliver false promises.

Certain synthetic ingredients used in many “designer” skin care lines are nothing more than engine degreasers, hormone disrupters and potential cancer producers. Take a look at the packaging for some of the following face lifting ingredients that are actually "face falling"!:

  • Mineral Oil, Paraffin and Petrolatum: Coats the skin like plastic, clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins, which in turn accumulate and can lead to dermatologic issues. Shows cellular development and causes you to show earlier signs of aging.
  • Parabens: An estimated 13,200 cosmetic, hair and skincare products contain parabens. Parabens have hormone disrupting qualities, mimicking estrogen, which interfere with the body’s endocrine system. Studies implicate their connection with cancer.

According to Dr. Axe, Researchers from University of California, Berkeley tested 32 lipsticks and lip glosses used by young women in a California youth program. They found concerning levels of nine heavy metals in many of the lip products, no matter what brand they were or how much they cost. Many of these metals are neurotoxin which have been linked to learning, language and behavioral problems. Listen, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, particularly, when it comes to your non-negotiable favorite products, but my goal is to shed some beauty light on how to lighten your toxic load, help protect your brain and organs, without sacrificing your beauty standard.

Licking Your Lips

You might think that your Nars $39 lipstick is free and clear, but think again the next time you perfect your pout.

Lipstick and glosses are often ingested over the course of the day so the impact of any toxin is heightened above and beyond skin absorption levels. "According to prior research, the Berkeley scientists estimated average lipstick use as twice-a-day applications and heavy use as applying lip gloss or lipstick 10 times a day. One application spreads 10 milligrams of product across a woman’s lips, most of which is ingested. Average use of lipstick means that a woman ingests about 24 milligrams of product. Women that apply lipstick or lip gloss frequently may be ingesting as much as 87 milligrams of product per day.”

For Detoxers everywhere, I wish I could tell you that your daily turmeric shot was enough, but our daily exposure to harmful chemicals, heavy metals and environmental toxins infiltrate and insidiously infect our immune systems...  That’s why after analyzing countless blood panels, stool profiles and toxic metal labs - including my own - I was doggedly determined to create a comprehensive detox program that worked from the inside out and the outside in. Presenting the LLH 4’C’s Detox Protocol- Cleanse, Cosmetics, Cook and Clean.

So, while you sip your Green Goddess smoothie (see p. 40 Vibrant Skin At Any AgeClick here to purchase),  unzip your make-up bag. Open your drawers overflowing with brand name bottles and jars of “anti-aging” lotions and potions. You may be stunned to see that MOST of your favorite Department Store/ Sephora lines contain one of more potentially harmful ingredients that are surreptitiously seeping into pores, tissues and organs!

I implore you to throw out the products containing the toxins below (all listed in my book on page 48-49. Click here to order). Clean cosmetic lines listed below.

The Sinful Seven

  • Acrylamide: Found in many hand and face creams. Linked to mammary tumors in lab research.
  • Mineral Oil, Paraffin and Petrolatum: Coat the skin like plastic, clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins, which in turn accumulate and can lead to dermatologic issues.
  • Phenol Carbolic Acid: Found in many lotions and skin creams. This harmful acid can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma and even death from respiratory failure.
  • Propylene Glycol: Used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and as a carrier in fragrance oils. This chemical is proven to cause dermatitis, kidney or liver abnormalities. Products laved with propylene glycol may inhibit skin cell growth or cause skin irritation.
  • Sodium Laurel or Laurel Sulfate (SLS): Found in engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners, at the care wash… and in over 90% of personal care products! SLS breaks down the skin’s moisture barrier and penetrates the skin. This sudsing agent also allows other chemicals to infiltrate deep into your body’s cells.
  • Toluene: Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Toluene is made from petroleum or coal tar which is found in most synthetic fragrances, at nail salons and in the majority of nail polishes. Chose your colors wisely!

The Collagen Collection

Lauren Rashap

Gelatin and Collagen: What's the connection?

The genesis of gelatin actually begins with a protein called collagen. Collagen is the most important protein in connective tissue, skin, and bones; you actually have more collagen - up to 70 %) in your body than any other type of protein. Degradation or lack of collagen can cause problems from wrinkles to osteoporosis.

In food, collagen is found mostly in the discarded and tougher cuts of beef that contain a lot of connective tissue.

Gelatin is the cooked form of collagen – it’s the way we can eat the beneficial amino acids in the collagen without dining on a plate of raw tendons for dinner.

Cooking collagen-rich foods extracts gelatin, but more intensive processing can also create a slightly different, but highly useful product called Collagen hydrolysate.

You break down both gelatin and hydrolyzed collagen into the same amino acids in your digestive system anyway, so in terms of health benefits, hydrolyzed collagen and gelatin should be roughly equivalent

However, they do have culinary differences in terms of how you’ll use them.
