Is Tequila The New Kombucha?

Lauren Rashap

Summer is in full swing so I would be remiss if I didn’t mention two of our favorite things to do in summer: soak up the sun and unfortunately, the sugar as well. Here are some tips to hack the ill effects of excess sun and salty margaritas!

1. Loading up on foods rich in vitamin C including smoothies from myBOOK. Here are some foods that will shield you from those nasty ultra violets: fatty acids, chia, flax, and hemp seeds, kale, broccoli, and oranges.

2. Here’s how to hack your favorite cocktail recipes… Stay away from yeast (beer!), sugary mixes, and simple syrup. Focus on low glycemic mixers like club soda, tonic, or even a little Kombucha for a little probiotic boost. See recipes below!

3. Add antioxidants to your cocktails to lessen the ill effects alcohol has on your liver and brain. Try things like adding fresh mint, basil, and even chocolate mint to your gluten free potato vodka, soda, or tequila.

Kombucha Vodka Cocktail
1½ ounces vodka
¾ ounce fresh lime juice
3 ounces ginger-flavored kombucha
Lime wedge (for serving)

Skinny Margarita
1Kosher salt or coarsely ground sea salt.
22 ounces (¼ cup) silver tequila.
31 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons/about 1 ½ small limes) fresh lime juice.
41 ounce (2 tablespoons/about ½ of a medium orange) fresh orange juice.
61 lime wedge or round, for garnish.

So... WHY Is Tequila The New Kombucha?

Tequila lovers argue that because tequila is made from the blue agave plant, it contains sugars called agavins, shown to lower blood-sugar levels and to curb appetite in mice in a study by researcher Dr. Mercedes Lopez . And weight loss isn’t the only benefit. In another study, Lopez found that agavins have positive effects on bone density in mice — and thus possible future applications in preventing osteoporosis.

Vitamin D

While I am all about my clients getting the Vitamin D they need, if you're fair skinned like I am you can’t always get it safely from the sun. Even my sun worshipping clients have Vitamin D levels that surprisingly, fall well below the optimal range for supreme immune and thyroid function.

"Vitamin D levels should be between 60 and 80 ng/L for optimal thyroid receptor and immune system function."

If your Vitamin D levels are low, it might be the reason why your thyroid is sluggish and your immune system is out of our wack. To get the most out of your nutrition consultation with me or any practitioner, make sure you bring your latest blood panels that include:

Vitamin D2: (ergocalciferol) – This form is found in some fortified foods and certain supplements.

Vitamin D3: (cholecalciferol) – This is the most biologically active form and is found in some high-quality supplements.

Protect The Skin Your are In

What is a health-minded person to do when more than 67% of all sunscreens on the market today either don't work or are filled with toxic chemicals that will actually promote rather than prevent skin cancer?

The answer is to use a good all natural sunscreen.

More than half of the sunscreens sold in the U.S. do not pass European standards as they don’t block UVA rays. We all need to focus on protecting our delicate hormones. Most of the sunscreen products out there today are known endocrine disruptors containing Oxybenzone and Retinyl Palmitate, a form of Vitamin A, that ironically can lead to skin tumors.

Other funny little ingredients to look out for in our mineral based sunscreen products are micro particles that are also potentially harmful. Don’t even get me started on those spray sunscreens I see all over the beach! Not only do they damage our respiratory system, but our ozone depleted environment as well.

My Favorite Sunscreens

1. Suntegrity
2. Juice Beauty
3. Coola
4. Beauty Counter

Kick The Sugar Habit

Lauren Rashap

Wishing you all a healthy, vibrant 2016! Hope you are all celebrating with family and friends over good food and a little resveratrol!

If you’re like me, I seem to religiously use the holidays as an excuse to overindulge. Whether it be that additional glass of my favorite Super Tuscan red or sharing a flourless chocolate torte with my daughter. FYI:  my one bite policy was a bust! While I teach my clients about moderation, that definition is subject to interpretation. After 20 years in practice as an integrative nutritionist, I think I’ve finally cracked the “Crack”.

If you've worked with me in the past or been to one my lectures, you know I present the hard, cold facts on sugar consumption.  It operates in our brains exactly like crack cocaine.  In fact, according to research presented by one of my go-to sources, Kris Gunnar's Authority Nutrition, “Sugar and highly processed junk foods can have the same effect as drug abuse. Sugar also has some effects on opioid pathways within the brain, the same system manipulated by drugs like heroin and morphine.”

This is why highly processed, sugar-laden foods can make (some) people lose control over their consumption. They hijack the same brain pathways as drugs of abuse."

So rather than beating yourself up for over past addictions, make a resolution to clean up your act. Take the 30 day NO REFINED SUGAR plunge challenge with me. To get you started, I’m offering a 3 day CUT THE CRAP SUGAR DETOX with my signature “food-based” cleanses.

Detox Your Home And Rebalance Your Hormones

Lauren Rashap

Night sweats, chronic cough, unrelenting upper respiratory infection, even difficulty losing those stubborn extra pounds. Believe it or not, your home might be disrupting your hormones and your health. Hormones, your bodies chemical “messengers” are affected everyday by the household products, cleaning supplies, not to mention your favorite skin care. We are being bombarded with hormones like never before.

Check your home for these 4 items

Plastic Food Containers - A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that plastic actually releases chemicals that have a similar effect on the body as estrogen. BPA, specifically, can actually cause cancer if exposure reaches chronic levels.

GMO's IN Your Pantry - a.k.a genetically modified organism, which is a scientifically engineered organism not found in nature. Studies have linked GMO foods with hormonal imbalances and infertility. Fabrics can also contain GMO cotton derivatives, including clothes and linens.

Heavy Metals In Your Pescatarian Meals
Fish lovers beware:  High levels of mercury are found in many of your favorite sea creatures. (Email me for safe sushi/fish list) Mercury is also known to bind directly to one particular hormone that regulates women’s menstrual cycle and ovulation, interfering with normal signaling pathways.

Cosmetic And Body Care Items
You may be surprised that many of your favorite skin care products contain potential harmful ingredients. These are a few of the most common and scary ingredients found: acrylamide, mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, parbens, phenol carbolic acid, propylene glycol, sulfate, and toluene.

We at Lauren Living Healthy are in full throttle this winter with this nasty cold and flu session taking our detox program beyond a 7- day juice cleanse into the one area of our lives that we fail to look at as being one of the major factors in our wellness. Last week, while doing a home detox I discovered several potential house hazards that most likely have played a major role in my clients stubborn unrelenting health issues. Aside from oxidized trans fats lurking in the pantry, what I found under the sink, ceiling, and in the air or “lack thereof” could most likely be the nasty culprits.

Client Testimonials

"I met with Lauren and told her what I was going through and she worked with me on a specific program as well as introducing supplements to counter my symptoms. After eight weeks of following her program, day one of week nine something amazing happened! I didn’t take a nap all day, my brain fog lifted and the best thing was that day one was just the beginning. Also my eczema has cleared up completely by week twelve. It’s been about five months now and I continue to follow the program. I have so much energy, I feel like a normal person. Lauren, you have given me my life back."

"I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis.  I tried all kinds of western medicine that made me feel ill. My new protocol that Lauren guided me through included visiting a holisticRheumatologist, infrared sauna and Lauren’s morning shake with a variety of supplements Lauren recommended. What made a difference was getting all the harmful food and chemicals out of my home. My psoriasis covered both legs from my feet to my thighs and they are now totally clear.  My fingers, wrist, knees and feet were so painful and now that has subsided.  I am grateful for Lauren’s guidance.  I can now play golf and workout without pain and more importantly (JK) wear dresses and shorts again."

4 Face Saving Tips For Summer

Lauren Rashap

Hello, Secret Sun Worshippers!

Since summer is always upon us in sunny Southern California, the temptation to bask in the sun is powerful. As you know, a little bit of sun can go along way to build your immunity, so I felt it necessary to share some of the latest research on sun-safe skin care.

4 Face-Saving Tips for Summer

Those of you who have been to my lectures on skin, know that I come from a place of neglect and regret.

Throughout my teens, 20's and even into my early 30's, I repeatedly over exposed my skin to those damning UVA's.

I've spent the better part of the last two decades trying to reverse, remediate and remove the damage done. I've thrown myself into all things skin: starting from the food to the facial and everything in-between and beyond. That being said, to save you from all the hard research I've given you four face saving tips that I swear by.

Bolster your natural sunblock by eating and supplementing with the following:

Tomatoes – Lypopene, the carotenoid found in tomatoes has been shown in a recent study to protect humans against sun damage.

Wild Salmon and Shrimp – Contains Astaxanthin, an antioxidant that is gaining some attention as an internal sunscreen.

Vitamin D 3 – Check your levels with your doctor to see how much you need.

Omega 3's – High-quality supplements.
