Is Tequila The New Kombucha?

Summer is in full swing so I would be remiss if I didn’t mention two of our favorite things to do in summer: soak up the sun and unfortunately, the sugar as well. Here are some tips to hack the ill effects of excess sun and salty margaritas!

1. Loading up on foods rich in vitamin C including smoothies from myBOOK. Here are some foods that will shield you from those nasty ultra violets: fatty acids, chia, flax, and hemp seeds, kale, broccoli, and oranges.

2. Here’s how to hack your favorite cocktail recipes… Stay away from yeast (beer!), sugary mixes, and simple syrup. Focus on low glycemic mixers like club soda, tonic, or even a little Kombucha for a little probiotic boost. See recipes below! 

3. Add antioxidants to your cocktails to lessen the ill effects alcohol has on your liver and brain. Try things like adding fresh mint, basil, and even chocolate mint to your gluten free potato vodka, soda, or tequila. 

Kombucha Vodka Cocktail
1½ ounces vodka
¾ ounce fresh lime juice
3 ounces ginger-flavored kombucha
Lime wedge (for serving)


Skinny Margarita
1Kosher salt or coarsely ground sea salt.
22 ounces (¼ cup) silver tequila.
31 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons/about 1 ½ small limes) fresh lime juice.
41 ounce (2 tablespoons/about ½ of a medium orange) fresh orange juice.
61 lime wedge or round, for garnish.


So... WHY Is Tequila The New Kombucha?

Tequila lovers argue that because tequila is made from the blue agave plant, it contains sugars called agavins, shown to lower blood-sugar levels and to curb appetite in mice in a study by researcher Dr. Mercedes Lopez . And weight loss isn’t the only benefit. In another study, Lopez found that agavins have positive effects on bone density in mice — and thus possible future applications in preventing osteoporosis.

Vitamin D

While I am all about my clients getting the Vitamin D they need, if you're fair skinned like I am you can’t always get it safely from the sun. Even my sun worshipping clients have Vitamin D levels that surprisingly, fall well below the optimal range for supreme immune and thyroid function.

Protect The Skin Your are In

What is a health-minded person to do when more than 67% of all sunscreens on the market today either don't work or are filled with toxic chemicals that will actually promote rather than prevent skin cancer?

The answer is to use a good all natural sunscreen.

More than half of the sunscreens sold in the U.S. do not pass European standards as they don’t block UVA rays. We all need to focus on protecting our delicate hormones. Gazpacho in the Raw For Radiance

Ingredients

  1. One Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  2. 1/2 of a large avocado
  3. 2-3 ripe tomatoes (Preferably organic heirloom)
  4. One medium cucumber, peeled and chopped or 2 Persian cucumbers, halved
  5. Juice from 1/2 a lemon
  6. Small handful of fresh basil
  7. Small handful of cilantro
  8. Himalayan or sea salt to taste
  9. 1/2 clove garlic (optional)
  10. 1 Tbsp  collagen powder (optional)

Directions:

  1. In Vitamix or high speed blender, add all ingredients, except avocado and cilantro. Pulse several times until chunky consistency.
  2. Use Vitamix plunger to create an even blend.
  3. Pour gazpacho in bowl.
  4. Add 1/2 inch cubes of avocado and top with cilantro & sea salt.
